An exquisite blend of green architecture, contemporary design and elegant artistic touch is what defines this home project by the Boston based architects ZeroEnergy DESIGN.

This LEED Gold certified residence in Orleans was created replacing the original home of the client’s parents. The entire family has been connoisseur of art; pieces were collected during their global travels and there were many developed by the amateur painters in the family.  As a result, art was always integral to the house and is also a significant part of this home.

The new home focuses on the natural environment, treading lightly. New features exude the clean and green feeling throughout the house with stable & comfortable temperatures from radiant floors, a great indoor air quality for good health & extraordinary performance through renewable energy systems. Above all, the artist members could not stop gushing about the new home's bright orange, red, & cedar colors, that truly made the house a home.

Let us take a tour of this home and feel the undertones of artsy refreshment all around.

Illuminated by Nature

This image of the home shows the lush green roof, replete with vegetation, abutting the roof deck on the second floor of the house. This living green roof provides a soothing view, facilitates energy savings through its insulative value and reduces roof run-off.  Also visible in this image is the second floor rooftop replete with solar panels that cater to nearly 30% of the household’s electricity needs. The roof deck has an outdoor kitchen. The bright orange of the wall complements the greenery outside to provide an appealing view.

Equipped for Resilience

Sitting pretty in bright shades of red & orange, this home has been constructed using a mix of fiber cement and ship-lapped cedar siding on the outside, for low maintenance & long term durability. Owing to location of the home, specialized hurricane-resistant structural reinforcement has been incorporated to counter coastal storm conditions. A sizable portion of the second storey is externally composed of wooden laminates. We can also see the cobbled space leading up to the porch area on the front.

Open to Refined Luxury

Inside, we can see the open concept living space with the lounge, dining area (not visible in this photo) and the kitchen. This image focuses on the lounging area with the 3 seater sofa, lounger, designer tables, fireplace and metallic planters.  The lovely painting sits pretty on the white wall. The clear glass windows & doors in wooden frames allow plenty of natural light to pour in, alongside offering visually soothing views. The all white walls and the stylish pattern of wooden floor complement each other brilliantly. Also visible are a part of the bright kitchen platform, a light colored wooden cabinet and the golden glow from the stylish lamp hanging over the kitchen space. The ample lighting inside, light color scheme & plenty of natural light filtering in make the room a very bright & cheerful relaxing space.

Happy and Hearty

Here spotlight is on the kitchen island, the floating pantry & stairs leading up to the second floor. Recessed wooden cabinets are off the floor (hence, appear to be floating) and conceal a big pantry within the wall. The attractive greenish counter/ platform sits on a solid wood base. Generous counter space provides a lot of working area for food prep; white stools provide seating arrangement for daily use. Glossy kitchenware & bright lighting contribute a stylish touch to the kitchen. Bonsai planters used as decor add a refreshingly elegant element. Books & the laptop bring a work station feel to the kitchen space.

The transparent windows near the stairs & above the washbasin bathe the area with natural light.

Tastefully Yours

This image shows the other side of the classy kitchen with the setting for dining. The open shelves provide quick & convenient access to dishware. The built–in wine rack conserves space besides looking elegant. Take a look here for some more inspiring kitchen themes.

Moving on to the side, we can see the small dining space with a charming white setting, bright lighting, sober decor, some wooden furniture flanking the white wall, and ample natural light pouring in through the glass window.

This space, like the others in this house, also celebrates the basal essence of brightness, courtesy the colors employed & the amount of light entering the home.

Every part of this modern comfortable home sings about eco-friendly elements and conveys a subtle hint of refined artistic taste. Simply magnificent, isn’t it?
