For most, one room apartments are viewed as an unfortunate situation.  Cluttered, unlivable and limited. However, at one point or another, most of us will find ourselves in difficult living ammenities. Working within a smaller scale doesn't necessarily mean that anything is lost. Trust us, it is amazing the boundless opportunities that exist within a typical four-wall living space.   Think about how you arrange your furniture, the decor and accessories you choose and particularly the colour scheme. We suggest keeping things minimal, down to the bare essentials and playing with colours in a creative and strategic way. Let your smaller spaces inspire you, rather than deter you from trying new things! It will be quite a rewarding and fun experience!

Dealing with the tiny kitchen

Even those in some of the largest of homes, still think their kitchen could be considerably larger.  With that being the case, remember that no matter what your living situation, you will probably always envy those with a larger kitchen.  Now, put those emotions aside, and make the most of what you have.

In order to properly deal with a tiny kitchen, think about proper upper- and lower-level storage techniques. As seen in this example, this homeowner has used shelving for upper-storage that also provides a decor technique in that it fully exposes everything.  Lower-level storage has been used under the kitchen sink and hidden by a chic curtain cover.  Although this kitchen is incredibly small,  you can tell by looking at the different items what the owner's priorities are.  There's plenty of space for food storage, food cleaning and a great sized dining area – which means they probably like entertaining.  The stove, oven and other appliances are kept to a minimal size or are otherwise nonexistent.

Getting rid of the barriers

When most people reside in their first one-room apartment, the first thing they think about doing is making divisions and dividing barriers within the apartment to create the look of more than one room.  Stop doing this! The only thing this does is clutter your space to an unecessary degree!

When it comes to privacy, we understand the need to add a bookshelf or decorative barrier – but do not create barriers to create the illusion of more space. As seen in this example, the living room, dining room and kitchen are all in the same space an the space stil seems separated, clean, efficient and beautiful.

Check out how this homeowner has created a  bedroom/living room area without any barriers and still pulled off a great look!

Capacity and functionality

One of the most important aspects of living small, is the proper use of creating capacity and functionality.  Both of these concept are undeniably important no matter the size your space.

Think about multi-functional furniture – tables that include built-in lamps, bookshelves with built-in hooks for scarves and coats and sofas that can provide extra sleeping space for guests.

Accumulating additional space is a top necessity in a one room apartment.  Lucky for you, there are plenty of ways to do this. Think about multifunctional furniture, overhead storage techniques and utilizing ceiling space.

This example shows the multiplicity a room can offer with built-in storage compartments, a sleeper sofa and a ladder to access upper areas, whether you use them for book storage, a sleeping area, or a an older child's play area.  Forget creating additional barriers using bookshelves and temporary walls – this will only create a congested living space.

To see another way of using upper-areas of your home for living and storage space – check out this example!

Don't lose sight of productivity and work options in your small, one room apartment. More often than not, people are working from home, or blogging and vlogging from home – this means that creating a productive and efficient work environment is incredibly important.

Choose overhead and underneath storage with cabinetry, as seen here. Try large work desks, like raw or solid wood that can span the full length of one room.  Use this space as an area you can type at, set up for photography sessions, make videos or create crafts and hobbies. Extra cabinetry and storage will allow for a place to put all your tools and utensils, as well as various other objects in your small home that you need a place for.

Perfect example

This aparment, though rather large for a traditional one room – is a mere perfect example of all the possibilities you have within a conjoined space. They have utilized the creation of proper barriers by using floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and have used a stairway as a way to access the upper-levels of the home which would normally not be used.

The barrier creates a perfect area for either a hidden kitchen or bedroom on the other side, which allows for access to sunlight through the multiple window exposures. As we said before, barriers can be difficult to create in a small space, however, if privacy is what you crave, then give it a try!
