The positive first impression given by a beautiful bathroom can quickly be reduced to a nasty smell, and unfortunately impressions which involve smell can last a long time. Smelly bathrooms are simply embarrassing and very unpleasant, but thankfully there are several effective ways to get rid of the bad smell in the bathroom. In today's article we will guide you through a few tips on how to remove bathroom odour, and we will also briefly explain how bathrooms end up with a bad odour in the first place, so that you can prevent it from happening again. There are also several useful links and tags included which you can follow to get more related ideas and information. Good luck!

1. Bathroom floor waste drain

The first thing you should check is if the bathroom floor waste drain is functioning properly. In order to prevent the foul stench of sewer gasses being emitted through the drain, the bathroom floor waste drain should have a water seal at the bottom. However, even if the drain has a water seal, it can sometimes still smell bad due to the waste and bacteria that has accumulated at the trap. This problem can be easily solved by unclogging the drain and flushing it with drain cleaner. For more information, please read our article titled how to get rid of the bad small from drains.

2. Toilet waste collar

Another usual suspect when it comes to a bad smelling bathroom is a toilet waste collar which needs to be fixed. Basically, if the rubber seal which connects the toilet bowl to the waste pipe is loose or old, it can cause the toilet to emit a foul stench. This is a common problem which often happens after the toilet has been used quite a lot, and the easiest way to fix it is to call a plumber. In some cases, the plumber may have to remove the toilet bowl in order to fix it properly, while other times using a sealant can solve the problem, depending on how bad the damage to the rubber seal is.

3. Bathroom ventilation

Ventilating the bathroom properly can greatly reduce the bad odour from the bathroom. Natural ventilation such as bathroom windows and ventilation holes are best, but if you don't have a choice, then you should install a bathroom exhaust fan. Certain indoor plants can also serve as a natural air filter.

4. Clogged sinks

A clogged sink is another culprit of a smelly bathroom. It is very important that you regularly remove all the waste from the trap and flush drain cleaner down the pipes. If you prefer natural solutions, you can also use baking soda, vinegar and lemon to unclog all the grease from the pipes in the sink. For more information, please refer to our article titled 47 ways to use vinegar for cleaning your home.

5. Push plugs

Push plugs are a relatively modern feature of sinks which allow you to plug the basin and fill up the sink with water without having to find the plug and stick it in yourself. However, this convenience comes with a price, because a lot of waste often accumulates under the push plug which can be challenging to remove. One solution is to use a strong drain cleaner, but it may not always work. In order to get rid of the bad smell completely, you may have to replace the push plug.
