Decorating your bathroom is one of the most exciting and fun design projects in the home, but it is not without its challenges. Because the bathroom has to deal with high levels of moisture, you have to be very careful about the materials you choose, timber can swell and rot, wallpaper can tear, and paint can peel. That's why it's a good idea to pay close attention to the professionals, safe in the knowledge that their expertise won't lead you astray, and that's exactly what we're doing today!

We're going to take a look at some of the hottest bathroom trends for 2017, to give you all the inspiration you need to design a fabulous bathroom that looks great, but is also functional and practical. There's a lot of exciting new styles on the horizon in 2017, from opulent marble, to fun bright colours, and we can't wait to show them to you, so let's get started!

1. Dark and moody

We generally advise against using dark colours in the bathroom, as it can feel oppressive and claustrophobic, but rules were made to be broken, and this fantastic bathroom proves that in the right hands a dark palette can look ultra modern and trendy. It's worth noting that this bathroom features two large windows to let the sunlight in, so if that's the case in your bathroom, then maybe a mysterious and moody decor like this is right for you!

2. Sophistication and class

Marble has represented luxury for thousands of years, and it's not about to slow down in 2017! Marble provides texture and character to the bathroom, and will make you feel like royalty every time you take a shower, and while it may seem like an expensive way to decorate your bathroom, there's plenty of options for imitation marble that will give your room that feeling of opulence at a fraction of the cost.

3. Timber

Timber looks great in any room due to the natural variation in hues and grain providing a dynamic colour palette that is sure to look fantastic. Whether you opt for a rustic look, or a sleek modern design like they have here, woodgrain adds an element of nature that just can't be beat. You do have to be careful though, as it's crucial that the timber you use is water resistant, so we highly suggest getting a professional on board if this is the direction you want to go in.

4. Stone walls

Another great way to bring nature into your home is with the use of stone walls. Stone is naturally water resistant, and like wood the natural variation in colour and texture really adds to the decor. If you want to feel like you're bathing in a river, then a stone wall is for you!

5. Industrial

One design trend that is only gaining momentum in 2017 is industrial style decors that make the most of the natural materials in the home. Exposed brick looks great, offering colour and depth, and it's perfect for the bathroom as water won't affect the bricks. When combined with some steel features like those fantastic black rafters you'll have a decor that is cool, contemporary, and functional.

6. Classic monochrome

For a sleek look that takes the best of vintage design elements and recontextualises them into a modern setting we suggest going with that unbeatable classic, the monochromatic black and white decor. We love the mosaic tiles on the far wall, bit it's the complementary charred timber floor and the thick black frame on the artwork that makes it looks so spectacular.

7. Quaint and charming

The bathroom should be a place of relaxation and pampering, and a shabby chic decor will make you feel right at home. Vintage pieces like that restored mirror combined with dried flowers and natural materials like timber and wicker will make for a charming bathroom that will melt your heart and lift your spirit.

8. Bright and vibrant

If you like a little fun in your life, then you're going to love our next trend; bright vibrant colours. Whether you opt to use just one or two bright pastels, or to go for the full rainbow like they have here, the key is lively colours and bold statements.

9. Natural greenery

Flowers and plants do wonderful things to your home, they introduce colour, they smell amazing, and they naturally purify the air, and if there's one room that can really benefit from that it's the bathroom! The recessed indoor garden featured here looks simply stunning, giving this bathroom a burst of nature and positive energy, but at the very least we suggest adding a few pot plants to your bathroom for 2017.

2017 is shaping up to be an exciting year in the world of design, and we can't wait to see what happens next so remember to check in here at homify for the latest trends! For more design tips, check out this article on decorating your hallway.
