Today we’re taking a tour of an award winning home in Krakow, Poland. Unique in its appearance, this home was conceived by Lemanski architects as an answer to an unconventional question: how can we minimise the space occupied whilst still creating a comfortable home?

After posing this question, the geometric marvel then began to take shape.  Let’s take a look…

Bending the rules

The unassuming front door is tucked away at the side of the abode, and the strikingly original shape of the home is a stark contrast to the neighbouring residences. Rather than having two floors uniformly across the home, the curved shape limits the second floor to one section above the garage.

The bright side

The simple, but effective design ensures that the kitchen is equipped with all the necessary amenities – storage, fridge, cooker, microwave and sink – without encroaching on space, as they are all tucked neatly into one side of the room. However, the real brilliance of this design lies in is the amount of natural light! Outdoor and indoor space is almost seamlessly merged thanks to the patio doors and formidable windows that cover virtually the entirety of one of the walls.

Cutting corners

The open plan bedroom – just out of view here – and living room have been masterfully crafted to get the most out of the available space. The corner sofa, perfectly aligned with the banister, provides a neat divide between the living room and bedroom, and the seating placement under the room’s lowest point compensates for the lack of overhead space.

A different point of view

At the rear of the residence, the practical purpose for the home’s curved shape becomes apparent: the garage.  The inclusion of the garage was a necessity specified in the home’s brief, and part of the inspiration for the unusual shape. The garage itself takes up nearly one third of the homes space at twenty-two square metres.

From this perspective, we can also see how the large, well-spaced windows fill the whole home with natural light.

Decked out

The sizable decking, accessible directly from the kitchen, provides ample space to relax and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. From our perspective at the rear of the property, we can see the advantage to minimising the space that the home occupies, as it allows more space for the garden; providing a more intimacy with nature, and creating more space between neighbouring properties.

We hope you’ve enjoyed the tour of this miniature, minimalist masterpiece. For more of the ‘less is more approach’, have a look at this cosy German home.
