We’ve said it before, but it’s important that the home is a comfortable, peaceful space where one can find seclusion. After all, it’s the one place on the planet that’s truly yours.

Today we’re taking a tour of a humble looking home that has a few surprises up its sleeve. The project, designed by Japanese architects Be Runa, could be the ideal solution to creating a peaceful, private space within the home.

Let’s take a look how this unique home has been designed…

A formidable yet friendly façade

Much of the home’s façade appears quite imposing, with little in the way of windows so as to protect the occupants’ privacy.  However, strategic spotlighting placed in the doorway gives the home a friendlier, more inviting appearance, along with the windows to the right that provide a glimpse of the interior garden space.

Creating creative spaces

Above all a person’s home should be a space in which they feel comfortable, and have the means to relax or express themselves in the ways that they enjoy.

Here we find that an art studio has been incorporated into the home’s design, with all-important access to natural light thanks to that patio adjacent to the room.

Open-plan with access to the outdoors

The kitchen, living room and dining area are joined in one open-plan space that makes the most of the home’s area to create an open, fluid living environment.

Simple, steel fixtures provide a modern, but elegant kitchen solution with a minimalist feel, whereas the living room has a more eclectic vibe through its mixture of antique furniture and dashes of bright colour.

The large patio doors ahead of us don’t just fill this open-plan living space with natural light; they also lead to a courtyard at the home’s centre. This is what makes this home so special—a seclude space completely open to the outdoors.

A simple, bright bathroom

The bathroom’s design of white mosaic tiles is simple, but elegant and appealing. The large tub and crisp white décor create a serine space where one can relax; made even more special by the access to the courtyard that connects the bathroom to the outdoors.

The courtyard that creates a centre of calm

Finally we have the home’s defining feature – the courtyard at its centre. The unconventional but charming area has plenty of comfortable seating so that the space can be enjoyed; including ample sheltered space so that the occupants can enjoy the fresh air whatever the weather. On top of that the unusual lighting creates an excellent ambiance.
