Summer is upon us! For most of us that means spending more time outside with family and friends – yet before that can happen, most of us probably have quite a bit of work to do before we allow people over. Cleaning up and redesigning your patio or garden area is an important part of home upkeep and, whether you believe it or not, it keeps the property value and curb appeal of your home sky high.

Below we have some of our top patio designs that can be recreated by you! Take the example that touches you most, or take something from all of them to incorporate into your garden patio this summer.

Green & shaded

Looking for shade this summer? Why not fiil your outdoor patio with luscious greens and add some bursts of colour with roses or hydrangeas?

If you're not looking to create a full-on garden but want some nature on your patio, then try large-leafed trees, ferns and any other tropical plants that are low-maintenance and will cover a lot of ground area!

Vertical gardening for privacy

The newest trend in gardening is vertical gardening. Yes, it is incredibly aesthetically pleasing, but it can also be used as a decorative technique that provides a lot of privacy and function to your outdoor area.  Vertical gardening is great for those with limited size, too.

Check out vertical gardening on a smaller-scale in this balcony example!

Exterior dining room

Bring the indoors outside with a dining area. You don't need a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen like seen here – just add a table and chairs as well as some great plants and place settings and you're good to go.

Relaxing atmosphere

If you have a great view to enjoy, then you're lucky. If not, you can still create a relaxing oasis. Opt for more plush and cosy outdoor furniture, and stick with neutral or ice cream colours to add a fresh off-the-beach feel. Some rustic and unique furniture adds a nice touch, too.

For a more fresh and less-rustic space that comfortably seats a full party, take a look at this wonderful patio!

Minimalist

For those of you craving a minimalist and chic patio, check out this example.  Keep the colour palette neutral or use stark white with bold, dark-wood furnishings. Opt for plants as your decor, rather than actual accessories.

Bohemian & Mediterranean

The key to a Bohemian or Mediterranean space is the colour scheme.  Stick with dark reds, burnt oranges and fresh greens by means of tropical plants.

Forget formal seating arrangements, grab a few over-sized cushions and a rustic, wooden dining table topped off with tons of white candles in various sizes!

Italian vineyard-style

A Tuscan vineyard is hard to beat, especially when it comes to the atmosphere, the smell of fresh basil and the glug of fine wine. However, you can easily recreate this look with faux-stone overlays, the colour scheme we mentioned above and some hanging tea lights or hanging vine.

The best part about hanging vine is it will reach full maturity over the course of the summer and return again – and again!

Relaxation for two

Ah, a place for two.  If you're limited on space or budget, then set up a nice place to enjoy with limited family and friends. Fresh, tropical greens that are low-maintenance, two comfortable seating options and some outdoor pillows and drapes can be just the right additions to create a comfortable and cosy patio.

We hope you take the time to get outside and enjoy the weather and all your home has to offer. If you're living under the restrictions of a small balcony, then check out this ideabook for even more help to get it summer-ready!
